Would you use Metformin if you have PCOS that isn't the insulin kind? Hi. I am maybe not asking the question correctly but would you use Metformin is you have the form of PCOS that you don't have insulin problems? Or would you just use clomid? Im going to the doctor in a couple weeks but i just wanted some more info before i went. Thanks. THanks. My doctor has talked about putting me on Clomid the next time i come in but has never even mentioned Metformin so i was curious when i have heard people mention it

WilksGirl replied: "Metformin can regulate your period even if you don't have insulin issues. If you have an irregular cycle, your doctor may try to regulate for a few months first with metformin before jumping to anything stronger like clomid. This also depends on how long you have been trying to get pregnant. If it's been less than a year, then the chances they'll just put you on metformin for a while are pretty high. Unless you've been trying for 12 months or longer, many doctors are hesitant to put you on strong meds."

ladyblackboots replied: "metformin and clomid combined are probably the best solution if you have pcos. metformin doesn't taste very nice and can leave your mouth dry so make sure you rtake it with a full glass of water. metformin can help keep your weight down as well as help regulate your cycle. clomid helps you ovulate, which is something the metformin doesn' t do. so combined they should give you a regular cycle plus ovulation, which is what you need to conceive. best of luck xxxx"

NorthCarolinachicky replied: "There's probably a reason why your doctor didn't recommend Metformin-your insulin levels didn't require it. Taking Metformin without actually having glucose problems can lead to very low blood sugar and throw your cycle even more out of whack. Most PCOS patients who are on Metformin are usually on it for some type of insulin related issue. (Some may use it for thyroid as well) So, I would just use Clomid, unless your doctor suggests otherwise. Good luck!!"

Kris_is_a_mommy_to_be replied: "I also wondered the same thing but like a few of the girls on her said, it will help with keeping your weight down and so my doctor put me on Met even though I had no insulin problems. But I am thankful that they did I lost about 30lbs in alittle less than a year. I then started Clomid with it and became pregnant the second cycle of Clomid. So I would say go for it, if your doctor wants you to take it do so, It won't hurt you otherwise they wouldn't want you to take it. I also recommend that if you do get pregnant have them monitor your progesterone levels for the 1st trimester to make sure your pregnancy is going well, I stayed on the Met till I was 13 weeks, I was told it can help reduce the risk of misscarriage. So also ask the doctor about that. And mainly the best of luck to you. ******BabyDust******"

Has anyone been on metformin for pcos more than 6 months? How safe is it for long term use? I would like to know if anyone has taken it for a long time and had any negative side effects such as low b-12 levels etc.

Lynn replied: "From what I have heard, it is something that is safe to use forever."

London Catlover replied: "I have type 2 diabetes and have been on Metformin twice a day for a year with no noticable side effects. I test my blood levels once a day at different times and I go once a year to my Dr. for a complete physical."

bbcrest29 replied: "WOW this is one I know the answer to first hand!!! I was on Metformin 2000 mg.. per day for almost 2 years for pcos. I did not have any bad side effects while taking it. I ended up gettin pregnant while mixing the metformin w/fertility drugs.. I did have diarrea for a while at first on the met."

Anyone NOT have PCOS and use metformin to get pregnant? I don't have PCOS, but I have ovarian cysts. The doc put me on metformin to help....conceive I guess. Have any of you used it? Did it work? Did you have PCOS? Anyone not have PCOS and still use metformin? Did you get pregnant? Yeah, according to the doc, I have three cysts on my left and one on my right. But they aren't calling it PCOS. And I do have regular periods. That's why this is so frustrating for me. ;)

Cate replied: "I have never heard of anyone having cysts but not having PCOS. Are you sure you understood right?? Anyway, my GF conceived after the doc put her on Metformin. She didn't have regular periods and that helped. She had to use a small dose of chlomid but got pg on the first round. She don't have PCOS and she did get pg using the combination of the two. Are your periods regular? He may have prescribed you that to regulate them. Good luck."

wandhdsn27 replied: "I was pt on Metformin to start my cycles due to my cycles have always been irregular I will have up to 1-3 cycles a year. I had a cycle the first time taking Metformin but afterwards all it gave me was nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. I was literally sick to my stomach with the meds. I have been wanting to get pregnant thats why my doc. put me on it. I have a son of 10 years old and wanting another....."

Serious Side Effects of Metformin for PCOS use? My doctor put me on Metformin 500 mg 3 x daily. I actually have a normal blood sugar at 78. I've felt dizzy, had a headache, have passed out (almost fell asleep at the wheel last night). I am not sure whether to stop this or go to an ER if this continues. She tried the pill to control the PCOS but it did not work. I also have a pituitary tumor. I feel awful! Will this go away?

just me replied: "Get your doctor to refer you to an endocrinology practice. Endocrinologists specialize in the treatment of pituitary issues and can help you get the metformin right for your system. I had to do this when I went on metformin, and the Endocrinologist got me on the right dose for my body."

mlbaker123 replied: "Metformin is also used in Diabetics so it may be causing your Glucose level to bottom out. You need to talk to your doctor right away. He may need to decrease your dose."

I have pcos will metformin make me ovulate and able to become pregnant? My endocrinologist is talking about putting me on metformin for pcos.with out medication i haven't had a period in 6 months. if i go on this with out bc will it cause me to ovulate and help to become pregnant?

rt Eternally TTC #1 replied: "I would recommend Metformin to anyone with PCOS. I have PCOS and was having my period every 3 months and not ovulating. Within a month of being on Metformin I was having a period every month and ovulating. I was not able to get pregnant on Metformin alone because my luteal phase was too short, but a lot of women do. I'm on my first cycle on Clomid now."

Baby gurl replied: "i've had PCOS for 10 years. never had a reg period i started taking metformin and it made me reg.. the back in oct of 08 started taking clomid and metformin and in dec got pregnant. But the sad thing is i lost mine in jan. and now im back takin clomid. So if i was you i'd take the metformin that will reg you and then hopefully you'll get pregnant. GOOD LUCK and lots and lots of baby dust.."

chrissy replied: "It helped me..I use to get a period about 2-3 times a year. I have been on the metformin for 2 years..I did get pregnant in November., Taking met and clomid had miscarriage in December. But we are doing the treatment now..this is what we are doing..(just a future reference and what to expect if you choose to do more fertility tests. We've went through testing and treatment for the last 6 years We have been trying for 8 years A gyno. would reccomend to anyone trying for a year or more to get fertility treatment First, for the woman, they draw blood test a variety of things that could impede (hormone levels, thyroid, etc). If they think you have a common infertility issue PCOS they'll send you for ultrasounds. Generally if your just delving into the fertility options your GYN will review your situation and prescribe Clomid. Which if I remember right is a drug which kind of makes you hyper-ovulate. Clomid is prescribe for about 6 mos. if nothing at that point, they would probably do a test to check your fallopian tubes (hystersaliopingogram ??sp) and refer you to a reproductive endocrinologist. And that's a whole other ball game so...... that's where I'll leave it. for the man, then I assume that they would just do a basic fertility test checking sperm count, quality and mobility, and make recommendation based on that result. Good luck to ya and hope this helps! c"

Tahlena replied: "after losing 35 pounds, I started having a period on my own but they were 35 + days long and I would always ovulate late. My endo put me on met and once I got up to 2000mgs, my periods became text book 28 day cycles ovulating on or around cd 14. After 2 months of being on met at 2000mgs, I got a positive pregnancy test and my daughter just turned 11 weeks today."

How long did it take you to get pregnant on MetFormin w/PCOS? I have PCOS and was wondering how long it took other woman to get pregnant once on MetFormin. Thanks!

localgirl replied: "I have been on Met since May and my husband and I decided it was ok to not be cautious about 3 months ago... We just found out we are pregnant..."

chiquita11 replied: "it can take up to 6 months, but if you take clomid and metformin together your chances can increase, talk to your dr. about it you can also ask doctors online for free, try fertilityties.com good luck!!!!!!!!!!!"

luv2teach replied: "I just started Metformin 7 days ago. I'm taking it along with Femara (instead of Clomid). The ladies that I work with swear by Metformin! I know of 2 ladies who got pregnant within 2 months of starting it! Good luck to you!"

foolish heart replied: "I take Metformin and at first, was having regular cycles (although I credit that more to FertilAid). Now I am off Fertilaid and still taking Metformin and still no baby. DH and I have been actively trying for the last four months (prior to that we were not physically together but had tried three other attempts both when he visited and even shipping his swimmers). I don't think that Metformin does much for me personally. Goodluck."

Metformin for PCOS how much are you taking? I am on metformin for pcos. I am currently taking 500mg 3 times a day. I feel like I may need my dose upped but am not sure. I was just wondering what the effective dosage is. please do not give your opinon if you are not on the meds. you are just wasting my time. I am asking out of curiostity what is the dosage everyone else takes. the Average range, thats it, I am not diagnosing myself , just curious.

mrs. ruspee replied: "You should talk to your doctor about this."

retrowfmk replied: "I agree, it may just depend up on the person on dosage...and you need to talk your doc for it. I am not on it since I don't have the insulin issue with the PCOS."

Randi22 replied: "I was taking metformin at 500mg 2 times a day for 3 months and now I am currently at 850mg 3 times a day....It's all helping for the most part. But to concieve or anything in my case I might have to get other medical help. If you are taking this to help in having a baby, talk to you doctor....Mine is for the help with periods and to also conviece. You have to start at the smallest dose and then your doctor, if it is working for you, will up the dose to better help you. I hope this helped you in some way.....Good luck!"

sommermarie1 replied: "i have pcos and im suppose to take the same dose as you but it makes me really ill so im naughty and dont take it. you should talk to your doctor about your dose and that you feel you need your dose to be upped but dont take more than your suppose to untill you know its safe.good luck with everything."

chelsie replied: "hello! im diagnosed with PCOS since i was a teenager and now that im married and preparing to conceive one. My doctor prescribed me 500 mg 3x a day metformin. To prevent the drowsiness and dizziness effect, my doctor prescribed me to take 1 500 mg for a week then increase it to 2 500 mg. ( I took 2 500 mg. metformin for a month and after that I increase it to 3 500 mg. metformin a day). Im in metformin for 2 mos. now and then next week my doctor advise me to go back to her to prescribed me clomid to help me conceive. GOODLUCK TO US! I HOPE WE BOTH CONCEIVE! PM ME AYT?"

trevnme replied: "For some reason your question is on here twice. I answered the other one, but will respond here too, since none of the other responses really answers your question. The recommended dosage of metformin for PCOS is 1500mg-2550mg per day. However, many doctors are hesitant to up a dose past 1500mg (I dont know why). Many women dont feel much of anything until they are on a higher dose. Before my son was born, 1500mg was enough for me. However, after he was born...I felt nothing on 1500mg, nothing on 1700mg. It was only at 2000mg per day that I started to notice a difference. I recommend seeing a reproductive endocrinologist. However, not even all of them are great. Actually, mine didn't really want to up me..so I begged my regular obgyn who agreed. Keep in mind that the nasty GI side effects might get worse with a higher dose. Up your dose slowly to help out with that. Good luck. I also recommend visiting: It's a great message board where you can ask all your PCOS questions or just go there for support. Good luck."

How long during pregnancy should I continue Metformin with PCOS? I am currently almost 19 weeks pregnant and after my first trimester my doc cut the dose of Metformin to 1 500mg per day (before I was taking 2 per day). She says she wants me to stop after this runs out and she is going to test my Glycose, but I've heard of women that miscarry after stopping Metformin even late during their pregnancy. I know PCOS generally only effects 1st trimester but I seem to think thats wrong. What did you PCOS women do and what was the outcome? If you miscarried, how far along were you? Thanks XoXo

Jessamy R replied: "That's odd. I had PCOS. I was taken off Metformin the moment I thought I was pregnant. They told me as soon as I thought I was pregnant to stop taking it."

My Baby GIrl is Almost here replied: "i took pcos just to get preg and i got preg within one month of takin it and stoped takin it as soon as i found out i was preg then my doct put me on progestron pills till i was 5 months .... now i have been preg 6 times 4 i lost really early 4 to 8 weeks, i had a baby boy at almost 6 months ( but he didnt make it) and right now im preg with a baby girl and im 35 weeks ... they had told me i had PCOS but i only took metformin one time and thats when i got preg with my baby boy. the other times i actually got preg on my own. But i dont think my miscarriages where related to pcos but im not sure. well i wish u the best of luck."

Kelly replied: "I'm currently 5 weeks pregnant and my doctor told me to continue Metformin 500mg once a day at least until 12 weeks to reduce my chances of a miscarriage."

hazel_ride_yamaha replied: "yeah i was taking metformin because my thyroid was throwing off my sugar because i also have hypothyroidism, and as soon as they found out i was pregnant they told me to stop taking the metformin."

Amy the Black replied: "I, too, take metformin for PCOS, so I know what you're going through! Congratulations on your pregnancy. I'm sure it wasn't easy. My first pregnancy, I stopped taking Metformin as soon as I found out I was pregnant. I had no problems and the child was fine. My second pregnancy, I took Metformin the entire pregnancy. That child was fine too. I think you should be okay with the reduced dose, but perhaps you should listen to your doctor. "While safety during pregnancy has not yet been established . . .""

For women who are taking metformin for PCOS, how long did it take to get pregnant? My fiancee and I have been trying to concieve for a little while now, and I have recently been put on the drug Metformin (Also known as glucophage) for my PCOS. I was just wondering how long it took for some women to concieve while taking this drug. All of my attempts at concieving have not been successful and I'm hopeful that I may have a better chance with this. Thanks!

Kiss up replied: "I was taking metformin for PCOS and i was pregnant in 3 months. I was trying for 3 years."

Cubs Girl replied: "Well I have been diagnosed with PCOS and I have been TTC for almost 3 years now. I just started taking it but from what I have read it will take awhile for your AF to appear regularly and for ovulation to occur."

how fast does metformin work with pcos in restoring your menstrual cycle? I am ttc and have pcos. I was going to talk to my doc about going on metformin and just wanted to do some research first. How long did it take to restore your cycle if metformin worked for you?
